Well, this is what I remember about SS in Term 1 :

1) We went to the library to watch several clips and a movie relating to the Gulf War we were learning about. We saw flying jets, heavy artilerry and soldiers. Also, a soldier who had a bomb planted under him. He was stuck. Forever.

2) We learnt more about the Gulf War; the countries involved, the factors involved, the consequences, who were affected , etc.

3) We also had several exercises on how to answer some question types , namely inferential and comparative. I remember one article that had Saddam Hussein saying sarcastically that the whole world was behind him.

That's all I can remember for now.

Unlike last year, I began picking up skills from Social Studies lessons.
I also learnt to identify different question types, like the inferential and reliability questions.

Inferential needs to include the purpose :
*Show who, Show what, For what :D
2I{with support} + P ?

veronica here.
what i remembered about social studies learnt in term 1 of this year is:
in source-based questions, there are inference questions, comparative questions, utility questions and reliability questions.
i'm taught on the skills of how to answer the source-based questions.
for example, for inference questions, i have learnt that we need to see the source, infer from what we see and to give a purpose of the source (show who, show what and for what)
for comparative questions, i have learnt the 5 steps of how answer them.
CCPRT, content, content, purpose of the 2 sources, reliability and tone. seek for common factors and difference between the two sources.
according to the syllabus for us this year, we have learnt about gulf war, which is the conflict between iraq and kuwait.
both countries are located in the middle east. iraq being land-locked, has only one port for commercial trade. hence it attempted to borrow 2 islands, namely the warbah and the bubiyan islands from kuwait. kuwait refused to lend, which is one of the causes of the conflict.
iraq claimed that kuwait was under iraq during the ottoman empire. us granted kuwait independence, iraq angered.
iraq accused of kuwait of slant-drilling into iraq's side of oilfield, which is one of the most profitable oilfield. kuwait denied of its actions. kuwait and the UAE ignored the OPEC guideline and they produced more oil. as more oil is being produced, the prices of the pil dropped from us$18 per barrel to us$7 per barrel. iraq's revenue was badly affected as iraq's revenue came mainly from oil. yup. basically, this is all that i can remember regarding social studies so far this year

The lessons were fun and i enjoyed it alot. I learnt more useful skills and even know hot to apply it in my workds. Unlike last year, i didn't really understand what am i suppose to do and how am i suppose to give the correct answer.
I've learnt to infere, compare the different types of sources.
Unfortunately, i've missed out the lessons which the class get to watch the movie.

so far, i have learnt how to do inference question type [2(I + E)+ P]and those that need comparison. However, not all questions need to do reliability, depending on the question. i have learnt about Saddam Hussein being a bad leader and about the Gulf War. Also, the indiscrimnation between the blacks and the whites. =))

I still remember on the different types of source-based qns. As for how to answer, im abit blur. I have learnt how to infer from pictures and relate back to the background information given. I have also learnt how to answer the comparison question on the various component: 2 contents, 1 purpose and a tone. I also knew the reasons for the conflict between Iraq and Kuwait, causing the Gulf War.

The lesson was fun and interesting and i got to learn many new things, example:answering source based questions such as inferential questions, purpose questions, similarity and differences questions.I also learnt about the reasons that lead to GULF WAR.

I have learn to tackle inferential question 2[I+E]P and comparison questions for social studies SBQ. I learn about the reasons why gulf war started and why osama want to bomb the US World Trade Centre. The movie that was screen was so interest, its a sad ending for that person to be unsave.
